5 Tips for Starting Riding Lessons
Are You Looking at Getting You or Your Child Started in Horseback Riding Lessons?
Getting started in horseback riding lessons can be overwhelming, especially when you're not a parent who has been involved with horses before. At KH Eventing, we are passionate about helping students build strong foundations and gain confidence! Whether you're brand new to the equestrian world or returning after time away, we're here to support you. So here are some tips to get started!
Tip #1 - Choose the Right Program for You:
When starting out, looking for a riding program can feel like a challenge. You want to find a place that prioritizes safety, quality instruction, and a family-friendly environment. A good instructor will focus on building basic skills without rushing, teaching students how to properly take care of horses, and helping them have fun while learning and engaging.
At KH Eventing, we value patient instruction and a supportive environment. Our goal is to build confident, knowledgeable riders who understand the "why" behind every skill they develop. Whether your goals are recreational or competitive, choosing the right beginner horseback riding lessons will make all the difference!
Tip #2 - Make Sure You Have the Right Equipment:
While you’re learning how to ride, you want to make sure you're staying safe! Students should arrive at lessons wearing boots with a heel, which help protect the foot and stabilize the ankle. The heel also prevents the foot from slipping through the stirrup—a vital safety feature.
Students will also need their own ASTM/SEI certified riding helmet. Helmets should always be bought new, since used ones may have sustained damage from previous falls, even if it’s not visible. The general rule is to replace helmets after a fall to ensure ongoing protection.
To start, you'll want to have:
Tip #3 - Start with the Basics:
When you’re getting started, it’s important not to skip any steps! Understanding the basics of horse care is a huge part of becoming a true horseman or horsewoman. In lessons here at KH Eventing, we emphasize the importance of horsemanship—that means learning how to groom, tack, and safely interact with horses, not just how to ride them.
These skills are part of developing a real partnership with the horse. They help you become a better rider and allow you to build a bond with your horse that is key to success and confidence in and out of the saddle.
Tip #4 - Be Patient!!
Learning to ride takes time! Riding requires both mental focus and physical strength. Don’t rush yourself or compare your progress to other riders. Everyone is at different stages of their riding journey, and that’s okay.
Your instructor is here to guide you from your very first ride, through your first trot steps, and even into the show ring if that’s a path you want to explore! Consistent practice is KEY. Celebrate every small victory—you’re learning something new every time you step into the barn!
Tip #5 - Enjoy the Journey!
Riding is so much more than just learning to ride and compete! It’s about the camaraderie, the fun, and the lifelong love of horses. Whether you’re learning how to ride for the first time, coming back to the sport after a break, or starting to jump, remember to enjoy the process.
